This was an preemptive assignment leading into our historical present project in which we were to study a common space and then draw it perspectively. I chose the inside of the fire escape for the Edwards Dorms on CSU campus in Fort Collins. The funny part being that I was nearly locked in after sneaking in to study and draw the space for a few hours. Then a short time after one of our dorm mates from the top floor did get locked in during the midnight hour sneaking around the dorm.
To start I brainstormed locations and spaces that were interesting and would be fun to draw. Then I landed on the inside of the fire escape of our dormitory. I snuck into the space and observed and drew from the corner looking out the fire escape glass door and window. I then refined the details back in my dorm room after I nearly escaped the stairway.
The final drawing was a black and white drawing from the corner of our fire escape stairwell looking out the exterior door and window. The wide white mat board border and black and white composition compliment each other well. The exercise also refined my technique for our later space observation homework assignment.
I still have this piece stashed in my artwork closet and haven't given it a final resting place. The white and black composition and mat board framing is an elegant mount that would compliment any office or living space. Perhaps I will dig this one up and try and sell it as well.
