This face sculpture had a few hidden layers of lives underneath its last coat of paint. I originally sculpted the base face figure out of a plastic mold in high school. I painted it several times before I painted the final design and decoration you see in the final photos. I studied art history in college as a minor and have admittedly always had a fascination about masks especially decorative ones. I collected a few over the years eventually giving them up for someone else to enjoy. This entire piece was handmade from scratch.
Before I painted this mask in its last life I sketched patterns and markings with a pencil and paper to design a pattern before I painted on the covered mask base. I took the original plastic mold and painted the surface to cover it in a fresh layer of black acrylic paint. Then I used tulip puff paints to decorate the mask with unique markings and patterns to accent the mask facial features and create an eye-catching design. I kept with a black and white color scheme pattern.
The final outcome was a sleek black and white decorated mask with stark contrast to draw attention in any area of the home or office. The back of the sculpture includes a wall hang hook or it can be featured flat on a table or shelf. I sold the piece in October of 2021.
The sculpture was purchased and now lives in its forever home to be enjoyed by the purchaser. I documented several of the lifespans of the piece including the final process to completing the work.
