During high school I helped a local restaurant open and consequently ended up working there for several years. In that time we expanded next door to open a dining room with games and a television. This expansion project included a new entryway by barn door on the exterior of the building. A coworker and myself persuaded our friend, and business owner, to let us ideate a storefront signage to celebrate the growth of the business and establish a brand based on the fun atmosphere that was the restaurant itself.
We worked closely as a duo to conceptualize, design and illustrate the iconic snake that would be the main feature. We then sketched it out on the large format surface to paint and finish by construction and final assembly of the signage to hang on the storefront. Finally we painted the exterior bar door in front of the business that would serve as the new entry to the expanded dining room.
A colleague working at the restaurant with me at the time and I created the storefront signage and painted the outside of the new addition. We both collaborated to design, paint and assemble the new signage onsite. We had the opportunity to create a custom snake illustration, paint some fun typography and deliver on this tangible exterior that fit the company brand well. We even added a "Specials" announcement board area on the front of the door to advertise daily deals and menu specials to draw in more business.
The sign was a huge success and the vibrant green color and fun snake illustration attracted both locals and visitors just passing through thanks to the unique brand in an otherwise industrial warehouse filled area of town. The restaurant was located off main street and not on a through street meaning people might miss the sign all together. Distinguishing the restaurants vibe and personality set it apart from other businesses in town and set the pizza place up for success for many years.
