Opportunity

Project Summary

After working for the magazine in various roles I campaigned to be elected as Editior-In-Chief and was voted in by the board of directors. This allowed me the opportunity to own operational management of a 47 page quarterly magazine publication. Collaborating with a team of students and advisors we created and produced College Avenue Magazine, a student produced quarterly publication on campus at Colorado State University. I served as top leadership overseeing the production cycles, supervising journalists, photographers, designers, editors, and managing vendor relationships through production and distribution. During my departure I helped transition the publication through a student media acquisition to Rocky Mountain Student Media and set the magazine up for digital evolution.

Approach

Quarterly I collaborated with a team of designers, photographers, journalists, and editors to product and publish a magazine publication that we curated content for in the form of engaging stories, photography, and graphic design throughout the pages. I teamed up with editorial leadership and advisors to spearhead our operational management of the publication from concept to creation, copyediting, press checks, and working with print vendors through to personally distributing around campus and local businesses. We pioneered sales and advertising partnering with local businesses for retail distribution space and selling ad space in the magazine.

Solution

We streamlined our production cycles through standardized templates and processes we could repeat and perfect. We celebrated successful execution and distribution of quarterly magazine publications several years in a row and won numerous scholastic competitive awards under my leadership.

Impact

Through advertising sponsor recruitment and fundraising campaigns in our distribution efforts we boosted profit margins and grew our margin for the magazine resulting in the first budget in which we were able to pay volunteer employees for their contributions. After pioneering the first successful established budget in the magazine's infancy we established partnerships with local businesses surrounding campus to facilitate racks in locations and distribution points across campus.
